E-learning Course on Cross Border Procedures for Sri Lankan Exporters

TThis online course introduces the various procedural and regulatory aspects of exporting spices, garments, as well as fresh and processed food from Sri Lanka, including to the EU and SAARC markets. It begins with a detailed overview of compliance, both with Sri Lankan national export regulations as well as with the requirements in place in the importing country. It then moves on to discuss packaging and labelling, sea and air freight procedures, before finally concluding with a discussion of the particular issues affecting the exports of spices, garments, and food from Sri Lanka, as well as the challenges facing these industries as a whole.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This online course introduces the various procedural and regulatory aspects of exporting spices, garments, as well as fresh and processed food from Sri Lanka, including to the EU and SAARC markets.

It begins with a detailed overview of compliance, both with Sri Lankan national export regulations as well as with the requirements in place in the importing country. It then moves on to discuss packaging and labelling, sea and air freight procedures, before finally concluding with a discussion of the particular issues affecting the exports of spices, garments, and food from Sri Lanka, as well as the challenges facing these industries as a whole.  

The course is facilitated by experienced professionals working in the Sri Lankan spice, garment and food industries, who are available to provide assistance and guide participants through the materials and activities. They will also be responsible for evaluating participant performance through case study assessments, which serve as the final test for the course.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the rationale behind the existence of regulatory requirements to export spices, garments and food from Sri Lanka;
  • Identify import clearance requirements and understand their purpose and impact on exporters;
  • Evaluate a variety of air and sea freight shipping and packaging options; and
  • Determine the regulatory and documentary procedures to export spices, food and garments from Sri Lanka.

COURSE CERTIFICATION

Participants who meet the course requirements will receive a Certificate of Competence issued by the NIOE.

SARADA DE SILVA (SPICES)

Mr. De Silva is the Chairman and Managing Director of B. Darsin De Silva & Sons (Pvt.) Ltd., as well as the Chairman of Ceylinco General Insurance Ltd. and Cinnamon Training Academy Ltd. He is a Director of the Sri Lanka International Arbitration Centre (Guaarntee) Ltd., as well as of HVA Foods PLC. He was also the Chairman and Managing Director of the Intercom Group of Companies until his retirement from that position in 2014. 

Mr. De Silva has 43 years of experience in the spice industry and was the founding Chairman of the Ceylon Cinnamon Association, which was instrumental in highlighting the importance of the cinnamon industry for Sri Lanka over the past 3 decades. He has also served on a number of committees and in an advisory capacity for many government ministries.

AELIAN HINGERT (FOOD)

Mr. Hingert has over 35 years experience in the field of fruit & vegetable exports. He began as a supplier for  merchant and naval vessels, moving on to pioneering the export of fresh fruit & vegetable to the Maldivian resort sector. He worked for 2 years in Dubai, dealing with chilled and frozen foods, and currently consults in the field of perishable food exports. He possesses hands-on knowledge in quality, packaging, documentation and the other aspects of food exports from Sri Lanka.

BAZ Global Logistics CMB (Pvt) Ltd

REZVAN RASHEED (GARMENTS)

Mr. Rasheed has 30 years of hands-on corporate experience in international trade, logistics and supply chain, serving as the Honorary (Charter) Secretary General of the Ceylon Freight and Logistics Association (CEYFFA) from 2013 to 2016, and currently as the Managing Director/CEO of BAZ Global Logistics CMB (Pvt) Ltd. and Aries Global Logistics (Pvt) Ltd. From 1988 to 1999, he served as the General Manager of Great Colombo Textile (Pvt) Ltd, one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of textiles in Sri Lanka, catering to a number of major global brands and retailers
